Meet your acupuncturist: Dr. Gregory Winn, DACM, LAc

Dr. Gregory Winn (he/him) is the newest member of Team Turning Pointe and we are so excited to have him!

Greg provides warm, personalized care for a wide range of health concerns, such as acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain, gastrointestinal issues, and stress management. He also welcomes patients seeking general wellness support, with an interest in helping adults 50+ maintain mobility, balance, and overall health. His approach combines acupuncture, gentle myofascial therapy, movement, and Chinese herbal medicine to support whole-body healing.

Q: What drew you to the study of Chinese medicine and acupuncture?

Firstly, the medicine as a whole is rooted in Taoism, a philosophy born out of the observation of nature and the natural order. Taoism is a philosophy I personally identify with. Secondly, Chinese herbal medicine is primarily a plant-based medicine, and plants are powerhouses of biochemistry that create a myriad of compounds that benefit human health and wellbeing. The benefits of the plants used in Chinese herbalism have been and continue to be confirmed by modern research. Lastly, acupuncture is a practical, hands-on modality that harnesses the body’s innate self-healing mechanisms. It is a unique system and I love what it implies about what the body is and how it functions.

Q: How do you describe your approach and care style?

I combine listening, observation, and palpation with an ever-deepening understanding of myofascial anatomy to provide treatments that are sensitive, gentle and unhurried. For those with musculoskeletal pain, I employ light bodywork in addition to needling and provide instruction on gentle stretching and strengthening exercises that can be safely performed while the patient is on the treatment table. For those with more internal conditions, I encourage the use of herbal medicine in addition to acupuncture and do my best to educate and inform my patients in this regard. The formulas I typically prescribe are very gentle and have little to no side effects.

Q: What is something you’ve learned over your years of practicing acupuncture or that has surprised you?

While acupuncture is not magic, it certainly has a magical quality. I’ve observed the best results with patients who have not delayed but rather come in immediately for treatment, before their condition worsens or becomes chronic and difficult to treat.

Q: What is one of your favorite acupuncture points?

Linggu, located in the muscle between the thumb and index finger, because it is so versatile and effective. It can treat painful conditions such as sciatica, low back pain and migraine, and help treat respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal and even menstrual problems.

Q: What might you say to someone who is hesitant to try acupuncture for the first time?

Acupuncture has a reputation in some circles for being a “woo-woo” or “metaphysical” medicine, and it is not difficult to see why. However, acupuncture is deeply rooted in anatomy and is therefore a very physical and morphological modality (even when a point on the leg is being needled to treat your stomach!). For those who are anxious about needles or pain, it is important to remember that acupuncture is a “sensational” experience rather than a painful one, and your provider uses very thin, high-quality needles that are designed for comfort and ease of use. Your provider is able to adjust your treatment (e.g. the number of needles or where they are located) to suit your comfort level and experience.

Q: What is your favorite self-care practice that you employ regularly?

Yoga, because it balances both body and mind. The practice stretches and strengthens the muscles and joints while regulating the nervous system. I enjoy its meditative quality and its ability to help me connect with myself, both physically and spiritually.

Q: How do you most enjoy spending your time outside of the clinic?

I indulge my love for music, whether listening to it, performing it, or creating it. I also love to travel and spend time in nature.
